 "Great everyday lens" 2008-10-27
By Steve Reinheimer (San Jose, CA, USA)
This lens is great. It's the only lens I use. The only problem is that it's so easy to use and takes such great photos, that I'm thinking of spending more money and getting a faster lens. This doesn't take away from the versatility of this lens, just that I'm getting more excited about photography and will move to the next level.

 "All-purpose lens" 2008-09-18
By Trent Veazey (Houston, Tx)
This is an ideal all-around lens. 85mm is great for portraits while 17mm creates a beautiful wide angle shot. The f-stop bottoms out at 4-5.6 but the IS makes up for this. For the money, this is a great lens for 1.6 crop cameras.

I give the lens 4 stars because there is some CA at 17mm, but depending on the subject its hardly ever noticed. In fact, I love using this lens at 17mm, at that zoom, you can get much more creative aw-inspiring images.

"Makes a good photographer better" 2008-07-05
By Charles L. Griffin Jr. (Daytona Beach, Fla)
Wanting to have a light kit for four months on the (rail)roads in Europe, I acquired a Canon XTi, 10-22mm zoom, the 17-85 IS zoom and 70-300 USM III IS zoom. I got them all in the six months before going and tested them thoroughly in my typical shooting of flowers, scenery, animals and grandkids.

On the trip I was surprised at how tough the little XTi was--and how good the sensor. Another surprise was the fact that the 17-85mm was used virtually all the time. The wide zoom was used for about ten percent of the 8600 images I shot and the 70-300 very rarely. If I were to go on another such journey, I would not hesitate to use the 17-85mm IS lens on an APS-sensor Canon as my only lens--it proved to be that good. I might add a polarising filter for reducing reflections and a walking stick and small beanbag for those places where monopods are not welcomed.

The photos have proved stunning, whether macro, panoramic scenes or street scenes. The European Union has passed some rather stringent rules protecting a person's rights to their own image, so you have to be careful not to do closeups of individuals without permission or you will be explaining very quickly that you are not shooting for commercial purposes.

I've seen many comparisons where this lens is not rated as highly as the L glass, but even in this computer-crafted technology, there are individual lenses that rise above the standard or sink below it. Perhaps I've always been lucky, because I've never been disappointed by Canon.

 "Highly recommend" 2008-03-25
By Jean-pierre Le Clair (Riverside, CA)
I recently purchased this lens as a complement to the other two IS lenses I have. The Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras and the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras.

The IS function allows a 2 to 3 stop slower shutter speed. Fantastic when shooting where flash is not allowed or where you want the extra depth of field a smaller aperature will give you.

As a bonus it has Macro capabilities.

"Versatility & impressive Image Stabilization" 2007-11-21
By Scott Broughton (Massachusetts USA)
I have owned this lens for a year. It has amazed me that coupled with instant ISO changes, I can take virtually any photo in natural light without flash. IS is the true beauty of the lens. I recently traveled to the south pacific and there discovered that I am able to take photos after dusk at sub 1/40th sec. exposures with absolutely no blurring. The results are stunning. Optically it is not the best lens I own, but this IS the workhorse lens for my EOS XTi. Once you experience the superior IS there is simply no going back to std lenses.

With its effective focal length range of approximately 16-35mm in 35mm format, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is a remarkable lens with outstanding image quality that will take your photography into new dimensions and areas of dramatic expression. The super-wide zoom not only gives you the freedom to get exactly what you want in the shot, it dramatically alters perspective to allow for dynamic expression. The lens allows you to get extremely close to subjects, exaggerating the difference in size between a near object and its background. Creative photographers can use this phenomenon to create excellent separation between subject and background for a strong sense of presence, or for a pan-focus effect with everything from foreground to background sharply in focus.Exceptionally light and compact for its focal length range, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM also has an incredibly close minimum focusing distance of just 24cm.A ring-type USM works in concert with the camera to provide super-fast, precision auto focusing and predictive tracking - with full manual override available at any time.Designed specifically for digital photography, the lens has specially shaped lens elements and Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections off digital camera sensors. An exclusive optional lens hood can further reduce the incidence of flare.A circular aperture provides a pleasing background blur when shooting with a wide aperture; ideal for creating a sense of depth and getting your subject or model to stand out from the background.

"This appears to be the USM version of the I or II kit lens." 2009-05-17
By Itsmeagain! (Nobamaburg)
The kit lens that came with a Canon EOS camera was not this USM lens, but this USM version could be purchased separately. The front lens surround will state USM in red; see the second customer image. Based on that customer image I would say this is series II (rather than series I), but it doesn't make much difference since optical quality is only so-so, and neither of them have IS (image stabilization). Build quality is on the cheap side. I am surprised to see this old lens still being sold, and at such a high price (I guess the letters USM demand a high premium). The kit lens versions have been replaced by the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. There is no USM version of the newest kit lens, but it does have IS, is much better optically, has a little better build, and costs much less than 200 dollars!

This is the Kit Lens that came with the 30D purchased new from National Camera.

Pay attention to the title. If the lens is marked just as the title, then we are on the same page.

Don't get suckered into a kit lens.

It will end up on a deep shelf a month later.

Don't test lens performance in bright sun or showroom.

Go to typical dim area to see what you need to do without flash to get decent results.

Now put on real lens to compare.

I ended up with the Wide Angle EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Autofocus for about $1200.

This lens is built the same as the red banded L series quality, but made special for the non full frame digital cameras. Like most of them from 50D on down.

The kit lens listed in title is 1/10 the weight, and 1/4 the physical size.

"Was good when first purchased... " 2008-04-21
By Sarah Mahaffye
I have this lens, because it came with my Rebel XT. It was the first SLR camera I ever owned, and good deal that it came with it's own lens. Well, when I first had it... it worked pretty good. My pictures were pretty sharp and good quality.

NOW, it looks like I take pictures with a child's toy digital camera. I use it on my 20D now, and it is HORRIBLE. My pictures are blurry and not sharp, you can see EVERY pixel. I mostly shoot models, and it's NOT cutting it anymore. I bout the 50mm lens, and the quality difference is incredible. I really would be baffled if anyone bought this to OWN. It's okay for a lens you get with a camera, but besides that, I think it's the worse lens out there for Canon cameras.

 "Basic Lens for Beginner" 2008-01-20
By C. Chan (CA)
I got this lens to go with my Canon EOS 6.3MP Digital Rebel Camera. This is a very basic lens not for professional photographers. The lens works great and has taken photos of images that I need most of the time. There are two things I don't like about this lens though 1) the Canon snap on cap doesn't stay on ALL the time. I have to make sure the cap is securely on and fiddle with it or else the cap falls off in the bag. 2) the lens exterior part is made of plastics so must take extra care when using it or it will get damaged easily. Otherwise, this is a decent lens for beginners to tote around.

 "Great all-around lens!" 2009-12-01
By FrequentBuyer (Los Angeles, CA USA)
This has been one of those lenses that stays attached to my Canon 40D almost 90% of the time. Takes sharp pictures and does a good job eliminating camera shake. USM adds great focus ability and really fast. Nice hefty and solid feel to it without being so heavy that it hurts your hands/wrists after a few hundred shots.

"Much better quality than the default lens" 2009-11-13
By Steve S. Yang
I purhcased this lens to replace the one that came with my EOS 30D camera, and I was indeed impressed with the significant improvement of picture quality.

I made my purchase based on others' reviews and they were indeed accurate and helpful. This lens definitely worths keeping as the new default lens for my 30D. I am not a professional and was only trying to shoot sharper and more color-rich images of my kids and landscapes, and it seemed I did reach my goal with this lens.

 "Soft...." 2009-10-23
By Savard (Madison, WI USA)
I'm not going to go into too much detail other than to echo the others who are disappointed with this lens. I have an XSi and this lens isn't much better than the kit lens. The problem is that I paid $400 for it.

My issues with it are mainly in image quality. Wide angle shots are usually soft, even taken on a tripod. Other shots have been soft also with aberrations, poor contrast, poor saturation and there is dust in my lens like a few others have mentioned.

I knew going in that the lens wouldn't be fast or very good in low light, and I have other options for that anyway(Mark I 50mm f1.8, Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4, Tamron 70-200 f2.8). Don't expect the IS to make this equivalent to a faster lens that doesn't have IS. Just doesn't work that way.

I just received my Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 today and cannot wait to get out and give a try. This will hopefully replace the 17-85 as my walk around lens.

The very best advice I can give anyone who is looking at Canon mid-quality lenses such as this one is to check out the Tamron equivalent. The photos I get from my 70-200 are stunningly good and I can go to 2.8 where the similarly priced Canon is a 4 I believe. IS and USM aren't that important to me, so the faster Tamrons with their outstanding picture quality are where it's at for me.

"Good features, not so great performance" 2009-10-07
By Ali
This is a good lens, but not great. The construction and build quality are solid, and the lens feels heavy and sturdy. It has a useful range of 17-85 as well as IS and USM which makes for ideal "walkaround" lens. However, it is not very fast (4-5.6) which limits indoor, lowlight usage. IS certainly effective and useful and will help for lowlight photography, but not for stopping action.

Ultimately though, a lens is only as good as the photos it produces. Unfortunately, this lens (or perhaps my copy of it?) disappoints in that area. Comparing shots, the kit 17-55mm IS lens actually took sharper photos than this! I still have this lens with me, but more often than not I have been disappointed with the sharpness, especially in my landscape shots (even at higher f/8-10). Barrel distortion is also fairly obvious, even to the untrained eye. Buildings, towers and other tall structures will look concaved. This is less prevalent for smaller, shorter objects, but nonetheless there. Vignetting is not present in most cases, though it can creep in at the wide end with the addition of a polarizing filter.
