This is a well made smallish wide angle attachment lens for the camera mentioned. I use it with a Canon sd700is. I also purchased the correct mount for it, but it does not fit my camera, forcing me to hand hold it in front of my camera lens. I did a number of controlled tests with the lens. The most controlled one was with the camera on a tripod so I could be sure I was holding it on the center axis of the camera lens.



I sorry to report the results were a great disappointment, considering the exorbitant cost to the lens. I shot a tall sculpture outdoors from various angles and the facade of a building from the fourth floor of a building across the street so the camera back was parallel to the facade. The shots of the building revealed the dismal sharpness surrounding the center. The area all around the frame was quite soft. Since I was using a point and shot and had no control over the aperture, I can not report if things are improved a smaller apertures.



I can report though that the lens does give a much wider angle of coverage with out any vignetting. Other attachments like this that I have do vignette, and that was the motivation to make the purchase.



Conclusion: If you can live with its short comings, perhaps this will help you create more dynamic images and capture interiors and landscapes. Just be aware, they WILL be soft!



I did not return my lens, but if you decide to, you had best be sure you do not get hit with a restocking fee. These can easily be 15 to 20 percent of the cost of the item, and you have to pay for the insure and postage.

True, this attachment blocks the pop-up flash of the s1-is, but I use an external strobe with a Wein photocell trigger on the bottom to compensate indoors. You can mount it on a bracket with the camera, or handhold the flash to avoid red-eye, bounce off the ceiling, or angle the light from the side.

The Wein attachment works with any strobe, make sure you get the one that ignores the red-eye reduction flashes (yeah, it's that good!)



If you are serious enough to use a camera of this quality, or the new s2, this is a small annoyance to get the wide angle capability this adapter offers.

Wide converter lenses normally make sense to be used indoors where space is limited. But the WC-DC52a can hardly be used there, because its big diameter results in a very big shadow on each flash-lighted foto (in addition the Powershot S1 IS doesn't support external flashlights).
So buy this lens only when you want to use it outside!

While, it hasn't changed my life, I have absolutely enjoy using this lens along with my Powershot S70. It's a great tool when it's used as intended. This lens is designed to extend your camera's optical zoom by 2X. This is very useful if you're shooting in Camera RAW. The S70 doesn't enable digital zoom when shooting in RAW. Please keep in mind that this lens is for distance and landscape shots. It's not an alternative to your regular optical zoom. Nor is it for indoor pictures. You should use your regular zoom in these instances. People have commented that using the flash with this lens will create a goofy blur on your photo. This is true. But, you shouldn't be using your flash anyway. When taking a picture of a mountain, the little flash bulb isn't going to help if there isn't enough natural light. So, turn the flash off and try not to wait until nightfall to start taking pictures. You'll find that this is a great lens for those of us who want a little more zoom and are just not ready to swallow the cost of a good DSLR.

I bought this lens to take some close-up shots of stationary items under low to moderate light environments. It is utterly useless for that application. The lens blocks the flash and you get a dark photo with a near-black 40% swatch in the lower right of the frame. It may be useful for those who plan to use it outdoors or in bright light situations, but if you're looking to take close-ups indoors, save your money.

I have just received this lens and have only tried using in in low-light environments, but immediately noticed a fairly serious problem in that the lens is so large it actually blocks the light from the flash from reaching the subjects and causes large shadows to appear in the lower right-hand third of every photo. Otherwise, the quality of the photos was good, so I expect it will work quite well in situations where the flash is not needed. It would have been nice to know ahead of time about the effect on flash photos before I made the purchase.

I use it with a S3-IS and is perfect for my kid's birthdays and other events when the subject is a table-wide away. If you use the camera's built in flash, be careful to point your shots a little lower or buy an auxiliary flash like the HF-DC1 because it may make a small oval shadow on the bottom of the shot, that will need to be removed by cropping.

lens adapter. Comes with front and back caps and also with a
fantastic pouch for keeping it in.

The only problem with this wide converter is that the built-in
flash on my Powershot G1 doesn't reach the right hand side of
the photograph when the lens is on. This is also the problem
with the light-sensor lamp and the red-eye reduction lamp.
Shouldn't be a problem with daylight and outdoor shooting
though.

Works extremely well. DOF you will never ever get on a large sensor. Only difference from wide open to F8 is DOF - sharp wide open. I shot bees from about 6 feet at 600mm equivalent. I get a 300mm to 600mm range without vignetting.



The lenses did collide so only a 4 rating.

Fixed with a filter with the glass removed for a spacer.



The low price is for real. Buy two.



Don't forget an adapter tube and a filter for a spacer.

Magnification (1.6x) is moderate. Must use almost full tele to avoid vignettes (black outlines)--that's normal with all teles.



Also works well with Canon Powershot G3 with 3rd party 52mm lens adapter. Recommended.

I bought this add-on converter and am thrilled to have added this and the 50mm lens of these necessary items for my set-up. I like nature photography the best and like to use my off summer days for hiking and finding photographs to take in perhaps well-known places but finding unique angles and subjects is what I like to specialize in. This lens will greatly enhance your experience in that 'little world' we commonly trod over or weed-ate away. I built a diffuser using a ping-pong ball over the flash so the lighting would work better. (Works great, btw).

This lens is well worth the money if, like me, you bought the A710 IS in part for its 6x zoom, recording wildlife encounters is important to you, and you don't want to carry around an extra camera for such occasions.



The main shortcoming of this converter is that it increases the minimum focus distance (at camera's longest zoom) to a whopping 6 ft. At this distance, the field of view is about 7.6 inches wide. Without the converter, at longest zoom, you can get down to a view about 4.1 inches wide, at about 22 inches from the subject. So, regrettably this means that if you want to capture miscellaneous subjects in nature that may be approachable (butterflies, lizards, whatever), you can probably get a much better closeup without the converter. I suspect it will mostly sit in my bag just in case I see a large animal standing around (but not too far away), in which case it can really improve the shot (almost doubling the subject's size).



You will probably not use it unless the subject is really special and worth digging the converter out. But it is helpful that a large leatherette bag is included with this lens so you can leave the adapter attached to the lens and just pop the whole thing on and off.



In an effort to get closer to the subject, I have experimented with reducing the zoom while the converter is attached. This seems pretty useless. For example, at 1x the view was ca. 4 inches across, 2 inches from the subject. At around 2x, at closest focus, you get ca. 3.5 inches across at 2.5 inches away. At around 3-4x, the closest distance goes up to 6 ft.



Vignetting seems a minor issue because you will mostly use this converter when zoomed all the way out. However, I could imagine situations where you are mostly shooting distant elk or something and you want to take a quick landscape shot without removing the converter. FYI, slight vignetting starts to appear when you drop a little below the halfway zoom (maybe ca. 3x), but even at 1x (35 mm equiv.) where you have almost a completely circular vignette, you still have plenty of real estate left in your image so it is not a big deal if you know how to crop out the blackened edges; but it is easy enough to pop the whole thing off, so that is what you would do instead.



In the end, the best thing (for me anyway) would be a highly compact camera with a built-in 10 or 12x zoom with good optics. This doesn't exist yet, so I bought the next-best thing, the A710 IS with about half the zoom I'd like (but much more than the competition among good compact cameras). But once that commitment is made, it's definitely worth having the 1.75 teleconverter as well. I may even buy an extra adapter ($20) so I can quickly pop on/off either this or the closeup lens without having to screw things together.

The optical x6 zoom on the Canon A710 IS is already better than cameras in it s range (i.e. non SLR). However, the zoom takes the picture up to the natural size; the tele converter lens really does make a difference.



Firstly, if there are any negatives, they are very minor; the lens and adapter are black - would have been nice to have been silver to match with the camera. Erm, that's it!



The main quality of Canon is the lens, which they always do well. The clarity of this lens is very good, with very little fuzziness at the edge. It also connects simply the adapter and seems fairly solid when connected. The electronics features help in the overall control of adding the attachment. The tele lens does make a difference for just getting that bit closer to get what you want.

This lens is a good way to extend the capabilities of a general purpose camera for an amature photographer. Overall all quality and color accuracy of the digital images is good. The large lens diameter blocks the view finder, forcing one to rely on LCD screen for framing. The camera sometimes gets confused during action shots taking longer than normal to auto focus - a minor inconvenience.



Lens requires an adapter - a seperate piece to keep track of.

first of all - you *do* get tunnel vision with this lens unless you are in the upper zoom range, and the canon manual acknowledges it. the menu setup option is just to optimize the way IS (image stabilization) works with the lens. i own a G9 and i doubt it behaves differently with the G7.



this takes you to a respectable 12x zoom, which is good for doing some nature work. the lens does affect picture quality some, i do notice some loss of resolution and contrast. and keep in mind it is much easier to get blurry pictures at this rate of zoom, IS or not - chances are you'll need a tripod or a hard surface to take optimal advantage of this and maximize picture quality. also, as you can imagine, it dwarfs the camera, so you will need a camera bag. having it dangling around your neck suspended while connected to Canon's plasticky adapter does not instill confidence. put it in a bag. :)



it just seems a tad overpriced for what it is, and at 25% of the camera value and with the fact it only operates in the upper zoom range i can not give it more than 3 stars.

I bought this Canon 2X Tele Lens to be used on my Sony DSC-H3 camera with 58mm mounting.

This is a perfect solution for Tele photos, the image is very clear and the size and weight of lens is more than affordable for this camera model.



I try several shoots also using digital zoom, where the final range go up to 32X (Camera 10X Optical + 6X Digital + 2X Converter) to take moon images, and the image clean and resolution is amazing.



The only detail to mention is that the lens don't have a front mount to install filters, very useful for landscape photo.



I highly recommend to all Sony DSC-H3/H10 users, to buy this lens.

Maybe it can't be done, or maybe there isn't enough money in it, because if it could be done or if there were enough money in it, surely the Canon lens development engineers would have already done it to complement and enhance their very exceptional peerless point-and-shoot digital camera, the G9.



The Canon G9...used by photographic novices like myself who want more than only simple point-and-shoot good-but-not-great pictures, yet still want a digital camera of much better quality with more features and capabilities that takes great-not-good exceptionally high-resolution pictures, but want a camera is still relatively small and relatively light and relatively inexpensive, but aren't ready or willing to take the big step into the heavy-duty big league digital cameras used by serious professional photographers with seriously deep pockets or credit card balances) is not a good camera...it is a great camera.



The Canon TC-DC58C Teleconverter lens is a good quality accessory lens with very nice optics for the Canon G9 Digital Camera, and, yes, it does what a teleconverter lens is supposed to do - allow you to zoom even closer and take very nice high-resolution pictures when attached to the G9 of subjects and views that are far away.



The teleconverter lens attaches to the G9 via a required lens adapter. Canon offers a plastic lens adapter - the LA-DC58H, but don't buy it...it's plastic for crying out loud. Lensmate makes a much more durable aluminum Canon G9/G7 58mm lens adapter that is of MUCH better quality - [...]



So, that's all good, but there are two somewhat annoying things about this teleconverter lens:



[1] Why are there no threads on the business end of the lens to accomodate attachment of a UV filter to protect the lens? It certainly can't be a difficult thing to engineer. The absence of threads on the lens body so owners can put on a UV filter - my gosh, that has to be an inexpensive and simple beyond description thing to do - is a seriously glaring design deficiency.



[2] With the teleconverter lens attached and the G9 zoom pulled back it looks like you are looking down a black tube with the subject or view you want to get a shot of showing up as a circle in the center of the view - which, or course, you are looking down a black tube. To be fair, the reason you attach a teleconverter lens is so that you can use the zoom to get even closer to the subject or view you want to get a picture of, and the black tube effect does go away when you use the G9 zoom to get closer to what you want a shot of. And for that, the teleconverter lens works as it should and gives you really nice pictures of further way subjects and views that you can't get with the G9 alone. However, it would sure be handy and nice and appreciated if the creative and very smart Canon lens engineers would bring a teleconverter lens that would allow G9 users who have the teleconverter lens attached to have the flexibility to take full-field-of-view pictures with the zoom pulled all the way back, and then be able to use the lens for its real purpose of extending the G9's zoom for those further-away shots.



Maybe solving the looking-down-a-black-tube thing is too much to expect, maybe it is optically and physically impossible to resolve. And it that's the case, fine...if it is becomse so annoying that a G9 owner can't get past it then there is always the bigger camera - bigger bucks - bigger lens path to take.



All in all, and mainly because of these two things, this teleconverter lens is just sorta ok for an add-on lens for a "tweener" digital camera like the G9 that is easily the best of the point-and-shoot digitals but doesn't reach the level of the big-time digital SLR's.



But I am just sure there are a lot of creative and really smart engineers at Canon, and if the MBA bean-counters would let them, they could come up with a much better and more elegant solution to solve these two annoying things about their teleconverter lens and still extend the optical reach of the otherwise exceptionally excellent Canon G9 digital camera and show the MBA bean-counters at Canon that their overly conservative sales and revenue estimates for G9 teleconverter lens were way too low.
