The lens is easy to use, it is rather light weight and the picture quality is excellent. I took a tour to Time Square the night after I received the lens and shot some amazing pictures using only the ambient light available. I will definitely use the lens for landscape night shots and Northern Lights shots here in Iceland.

Let me start out by saying I'm a hobbyist and photography is not how I make my living...



I work for a company that supplies structural steel to the commercial GC's all over Texas. I use this lens to take great pictures of buildings! I can get up close to the building and take a great picture with a lot of crisp detail in the foreground and bokeh in the background. Without it, I was using a 50 or 85mm and I would have to stand too far away and would loose the detail up close.



Limitation: One thing to note is that on a 10D, the lens is so big that the integrated camera flash will cast a shadow in your pictures. This is not a problem with my 30D (or with a speedlite), but it is a problem when my father uses it on his 10D and didn't want to take a speedlite.



Overall, I really like using this lens and use it a lot... in fact, it stays on my camera 85% of the time.

Although I am very new to the SLR world I made the jump right to this L series lens and I love it. Super sharp images, great color, very fast focus, and having 16mm to play with at the wide end is a lot of fun. There is definitely some light fall off at the corners with the aperture wide open, but stopped down it isn't really an issue. There is slight distortion at the widest angles but I kind of like that effect to I'm not bothered by it. I shoot a lot in overcast and dark conditions so the f/2.8 is great. The only thing I have been struggling with is flare in bright conditions. Pointed near the sun at 16mm even with the hood on you still have to be careful. Like I said, I don't have a lot of experience yet so I can't say if this is normal or not. The flaring isn't anything so damaging that it cannot be corrected in Photoshop. I'm extremely pleased with this lens!

On Feb 22, 2007, Canon announced a "II" version of this lens that will correct the optical performance problems this lens has. The new lens has been completely redesigned, and will require MASSIVE 82mm filters. Yikes! I do not own this lens, as I am now waiting to see if the II version will be more expensive, or if this version will drop below $1000. As mentioned, the new version will require 82mm filters, which will be even more expensive than the filters the I version uses.



The II version has now been listed on Amazon. It looks like the II will be about $300 more, rather than this version dropping in price (so far).

I purchased this lens a few months ago. It is absolutely incredible for sports photography and wildlife/nature photography. Fast focus, incredible sharpness, rock-solid feel. I can't think of any negatives. It's a bit heavy, so be prepared to hold it securely or invest in a high-quality monopod.

I consider myself to be a very privileged amateur wildlife photographer simply by being able to own one of these amazing over the top lenses! Its heavy, no mistake, and needs a monopod - I use the Manfrotto 681B.



Only own it if you feel able to throw yourself under it to protect your investment! I consider this ethical issue most early mornings when descending down slopes or climbing over rocks. A sturdy monopod has prevented many serious issues and I have yet to have a hard impact.



I go out early in the morning with it set to a default of F2.8/ISO800 and as the sun rises steadily move to F4/ISO200 ready for quick snaps. I keep a Canon EF 1.4x Extender in my pocket so that I can take small bird shots at 560mm. The extender does reduced the percentage of "keeper" photo's from say 25% down to 10% in typical use.



I have a 24-105/F4, 70-200/F2.8, 400/F5.6, but this is the lens I use for 90% of the time. I often have the 24-105mm or a 10-22mm in my pocket to capture wider shots, but they don't give the mind blowing shots that can only be achieved by one of the big telephoto's.



I considered the 500/F4 because its lighter, but I like the flexibility of 400/560mm and using every last bit of light that's available early in the morning.

This lens is the tool to get images that jump out at the viewer. As a sports lens I don't know if there is a better solution. It is a lot of weight to pack around, but after one or two games you get used to moving it around. A mono-pod is required for shooting any more than a few shots at a time. Since I purchased this lens it has been attached to my camera exclusively with the exception of one wedding shoot.

I consider this lens indispensible for the photography I do (action and sports). It has paid for itself in photographic sales many times over with images that no other lens can take. I combine it with good camera support (Gitzo 1325) and a Wimberly head. With a 1DMk2 body, we're talking over 15 lbs, and that's not something you want to hand hold. The images at f/2.8 are sharp and contrasty. When I nail a shot, the shallow depth of field is breathtaking. It's ability to stop action and to work in low light is amazing. I've had someone ask me how often I use this lens, and the answer is "every chance I get." You want to know how Sports Illustrated Photographers get their shots? This is part of their toolkit.

I have a 17-55 Canon lens which I use on my 30D and 50D. It works great. When I got my 5D MkII I purchased the 14mm lens. It is awesome. For me just wide enough - not quite fisheye. It is a lens which offers incredible possibilities for unique views and perspectives and its speed certainly helps - although I tend to go for more depth of field which it accomodates as well. I have several L series lenses, but I can see where this one will be my "creative" lens. If you can afford it, you will be thrilled to own and use it.

This lens is the top of the line wide angle. A significant improvement over the last 14mm and a must have for anyone who loves the distorted look wide angle gives. When I was a kid my dad gave me a very wide lens for an old minolta. Since then i have always loved the look this brings to certain photos. I have tested this lens and the results are spectacular. It is very fast and works well in low light. I highly recommend this lens, despite its price.

as soon as i received it, i set my camera up on a tripod and shot the same picture, first with the old canon 14mm, and then with the new. the improvement in the new lens in terms of corner to corner sharpness was really significant. the only thing that was somewhat disappointing, was that the new lens had considerably more fringing around high-contrast edges. i shot an image of an interior with a view out the window and there was a very wide, highly saturated blue fringe even in the center of the image. the old 14mm experienced fringing too, but rarely in the center of the image, and even at the edges, was not as extreme as it is in the center of the new lens. granted the difference in luminance was quite extreme between the interior and exterior (at least 5 stops) so this is not a problem that would effect every image, but it is something to be aware of. even with this problem, i would still recommend the new lens again as the increase in sharpness far outweighs the inconvenience of having to retouch the occasional fringing.

The only reason I have this lens is better picture quality than any zoom in this price range and more. Forget the entire Canon "non L" zooms. They produce muddy non vivid pictures. With the good lighting condition zooms are fine, but any $200 camera can make OK pictures in the good day.

And there is something more to this L lens; I mean better consistency of sharpness and skin colors. You know those nasty reddish skin colors. Not with this lens. Less work on Photoshop.



Not as convenient as zoom?



OK. The next level is.... white Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM.

F/2 and IS (Image Stabilization) versus f/2.8 and no image stabilization.

Sharpness level is the same. Any price difference? You check yourself, you will be surpized.

Got mine in the mail yesterday. I had to run errands after work, so I just fiddled around with it a little. Let me tell you what- this lens is tack sharp and has beautiful color and contrast. And, you feel like a secret agent running around surreptitiously shooting people and cars at 200 mm (i.e. 320 on my EOS 50D). At 1600 ISO, you can handhold indoors in minimal lighting. Very pleased with my purchase- off to the zoo the next sunny weekend!

Don't let the reviews make you think this is RAZOR sharp. I would have expected better from a prime L lens. However, this lens is still quite sharp. I would have wished for IS but, of course, that would have raised the price to a place that I don't have money for right now.

Just know what you need a lens for and see if this matches. A prime at this focal length will mean a lot of walking around to frame your subject.

Makes a great match for my 40D

Let's just recap what all the reviews say about this lens in one word: perfect.



My review won't add too much more to what's already been said, but I will point out a few things about this lens that I really like.



+ It's the sharpest piece of glass I've ever seen. This lens is sharper wide open than my 100-400 at 300mm stopped down to f/8.



+ It has 3 focus limiter switches. This takes a while to get used to, but it also makes the autofocus incredibly fast especially for distant moving targets.



+ It takes a 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverter incredibly well. Even with the 2x attached, the lens is still very sharp. When using the focus limiter, the autofocus with the 2x is still fast enough to capture birds in flight handheld. There's no appreciable difference with this lens bare and with the 1.4x teleconverter.



+ Attached to my 1D2, the autofocus is so fast I can't visually keep up with it sometimes. Yes, it's that darn awesome, and no I'm not kidding...



+ The focus preset system is not really intuitively clear, however, once you get it down, it's really really helpful for setting up your shots when you know where your target is going to be. Bigtime plus for tracking faster subjects in predictable paths.



There are no cons to this lens except one. It's HEAVY. I use mine on a tripod or monopod, however it can be use handheld even with the 1.4 attached for a good amount of time especially if you've got stronger arms and can hold it up.



Overall, if I could give this lens 10 stars out of 5, I would. I was worth every single penny.

I am not a professional photographer. I bought this lens from Ebay, used and without IS. The lens is very fast, sharp and sturdy. I like it very much. I used this lens to take pictures of deer in my backyard. But the lens is very heavy. You cannot use it without a tripod or monopod. However, I have a question and I would appreciate if you could spend a moment to share your valuable experience with me. Does this lens require a UV filter and a Polarizing filter? I bought two of these filters, each 110mm in size, thinking that I could install them at the front end of the lens. But there is no thread in the rubber-molded rim at the front end of the lens. I checked the Amazon specification above and noticed that a 52mm dropped-in filter is mentioned. (Nothing mentioned about any 110mm filters). Logically the only location for putting a 52mm filter would be at the back end of the lens. Discussing with a filter supplier in England, I was informed that there is a 52mm gel-type filter at the back end covered underneath a screwed-plate. This 52mm lens may have been put in there by Canon when the lens was built. I bought the 110mm filters from this filter supplier, then he asked me whether the 52mm gel-type filter is available in market. Now I have two problems to solve: (1) Do you use UV and Polarizing filters with this lens? If so, how do you fasten them to the lens, and (2) Is the 52mm filter available in market? and where to get it from? Thank you.

- Sharp wide open and that is what counts (sharpens nicely with software).

- Sharpens more when stopped down an f-stop (outstanding resolution).

- Fast auto focus (fastest I have seen).

- Solid build (switches and rings are precise without play).

- Replaceable flat front glass which protects the adjacent UD element.

- Autofocus stop buttons.

- Dust and water resistant.

- Programmable preset focusing.

- Removable tripod collar.



Like:



- Optical image stabilization (wish it had the newer 3-4 stop version).

- Hard case (good for storing lens in your house, vehicle or airplane).

- A good way to meet nice strangers (especially the ladies) who approach and raises questions about the lens.



Dislike:



- E-145 lens cap (will dislodge if lens is carried in the field with the hood reversed).

- Paint will come off on the barrel at the ET-120 lens hood contact point.

- Need to buy Canon touch up paint to repaint lens hood contact point on barrel.

- Not a dislike but the strap's buckle can scratch the prism housing (position the buckle close to the lens away from the camera).

- Weight (not really hand holdable and needs at least a monopod).

- Cost (but it's faster and sharper than the Canon 300/4 versions).



This is the sharpest and fastest autofocus lens in my collection. The 70-200/4 IS is a close second.

Oh my goodness...what a lens! This is such an awesome lens. I wrote a review for the 35mm and said that it was the sharpest lens Canon made but oh god was i wrong. This lens is so darn sharp at all stops. It focuses so quickly and takes the most insane photos. It is a little heavy and you will draw a few looks carrying it around. I went to Yellowstone with this attached to my 5D Markii that already had a grip and people were literally staring at me and pointing. It felt a bit strange. Anyway the quality of the build is the best you can get. It is expensive but really worth the price. You will not regret it at all. It works great with the extender 1.4x.  "best lens for sports, day and night" 2009-11-22

I'm not a pro, but have loved taking sports photos for years with film SLR and digital cameras. I have a Tamron lens that has been great so spending this much money on a lens was questionable to me. I wanted better night shots and all the reviews on line for the canon 70-200 lens were great. After using the lens I can say spending the money for the f/2.8L was worth every penny.



I'm glad I didn't go with the fixed 300mm as I wouldn't have been able to take shots as the boys ran toward me. The 70-200 gives just enough range to get great distance and close up shots. The shots I get of the high school football games are outstanding... stopping grass in the air, catching the fumbles, the sweat on their faces. Now I'm on to basketball and hope to get shots that are just as good.

I have used this lens for 2 1/2 solid years at Motorcycle Racing Events, this lens has been banged and dropped in the mud, snow and more. I have never had a problem with this lens, the Auto focus is still as fast as it was when it was new. More than 150,000 photos have been taken through this lens and it still produces beautiful photos. If you have ever thought about purchasing one of these lenses

I am a firm believer and would suggest this lens to anyone. I have used this lens on a 30D, 40D, 5D and 1D mark III and the results have always been the same... GREAT!!!

Indoors in the evening only other light source was a ceiling fan with 2 60watt Florescent bulbs:

NO TRIPOD!

Flash Used 580ex II - ETTL with -2/3 power Fully Charged Batteries High-speed >> sync Turned on.

Flash pointed to 9 foot tall white ceiling.

I took this shot take from crouched position.

Camera Settings:

ISO Setting 100

F-Stop 8.0

Shutter Speed 125

Multi Metering (0)

Picture Style Setting at Standard with Sharpness at +7





The Left Side of the Photo is with Image Stabilization "IS" turned on and the right side of the photo is with the "IS" Turned off. There is a very clear difference in the photos. You can notice there is far more detail in the left side and you can see this light switch is painted and not printed. The most noticeable difference is in the letters on the light switch, the letters (ON) is more clear in the side with "IS" Turned on and is not as sharp with "IS" Turned OFF. Basically if you wonder how well IS works then this will give you a great idea... Plus this lens is about 2 1/2 years old and it still works flawlesly.



When I am shooting outdoors with plenty of light I turn it off because the shutter speed of the camera is fast enough to not need it, I have comparison shots with outdoor action sports photos and I get much sharper Images in the day light with it turned off. If it is cloudy I will turn it on from time to time but still prefer it off when shooting outdoors.



I hope this helps someone who just isn't sure. I know it is alot of money to spend on a lens but having a great lens you will get stunning results with even the entry level Canon SLR cameras like the XSI, spend the money you wont regret it...
