"Decent bang for the buck" 2009-02-05
By J. Gintautas (CALIFORNI_A)
Ive only had my XTI for a few days and let me just say that Ive taken some amazing pictures with this lens, ive read that its great for beginners and better than the 18-55 mm kit lens. I added a few pics that I took with this lens check them out.

 "3.5 Stars" 2009-01-21
By Jacob P. Lavender (Germany)
In general I think that this lense is an excellent walk around lense that offers an adequate range for most individuals. I have used this lense on both an EOS Rebel K2 (kit lens for this camera) and a 30D (I only got the body). Of course, the 30D will easily out perform this lense and with the K2, unless you develop your own film, you will have to suffer the development by a "franchise" style 1 hr photo (if you are buying this lens, more than likely you're not developing and you probably don't want to pay astronomical prices for your shots anyway).

In general, I think that its an acceptable lens that offers quality shots. With this, you are getting a Canon lens at a CHEAP price in comparison with some of their others, so in some sense you are paying for the name. Is it worth it? In this price range...yeah, probably. We're not talking L class lens here.

So for the average person just wanting to get some good shots on their camera then this lens should work well. It does feel a little cheap and light in my opinion but its considered a kit lens to begin with so can't complain too much there. I've been using it for over a year now and thus far have taken some decent shots with it. I have posted some for reveiwers viewing pleasure. Nothing phenomenal, but something to go off of.

If I were to give a recommendation I think it would be as a kit lens, yeah its good. As far as buying afterwards I might consider spending a few more bucks and stepping up the zoom and aperature a bit. Low light kills this lense in my opinion but its only an f4 wide open...what do you expect? Put it on a tripod and set you camera to Tv and you can get some decent shots. I've post one that was at night with a great deal of light noise...it did ok...made for an interesting shot.

My greatest two gripes would be:

As mentioned above low light destroys this lens (it doesn't have IS and has an f4 aperature wide open...only so much to say here considering price though).

Second, I don't care for the switch between MF and AF...not convenient for me. It could work but I've never personally found it positioned well or ease of switching. Just a personal issue though. Others might find it perfect.

Overall...decent lens for just having a good time and getting a decent name brand to compliment.

Canon EF 28-105mm f/4-5.6 USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

An entirely new lens which joins Canon's existing 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM in the line-up. It's the smallest and lightest zoom in the 28-105 class, and its new optical system includes an Aspherical element. Most noteworthy is its new Micro USM II - half the size of previous Micro USMs, and its use of internal focusing (no front element rotation during focusing).

 "Quality and price match" 2007-12-27
By Lyndon Johnson (Goldsboro, NC)
Once again, you get what you pay for. I use this with a Rebel XTi. This lens works great, quiet enough focus and covers a good range at a great price. However, I hope you like your pictures a little soft. All my pictures are a little soft with this lens. It is worth a little more money to get a better lens. If you are just a student or taking a photography class and don't really need super sharp pictures this may be great for you.

 "Great price, great quality." 2007-04-13
By S. Butcher (Monterey, CA, USA)
I really don't understand the negative reviews, this lens is an ideal all round lens, it isn't expensive and its great quality for the price, it isn't amazing but the quality is ideal for me, I am intern photographer, and a photography student, its a Canon lens and Canon don't make bad equipment, I use this lens for an everyday lens, its great if I'm looking for something thats simlar to what the eye sees. I use a wide-angle, a macro, and a telephoto for my other needs and this is a great in-between lens for when I don't want the extremes of an angle. For a great all round reliable brand name lens at a great price, this is the lens for you!!

 "Awful lens" 2005-10-05
By Husein Roncevic (Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina)
I bought EOS 20D and took this lens as well as my camera was without a lens. Most of the pictures shot with this lens are pretty blury. Even some of them when the flash was enabled were strange. Other times I managed to get a good picture or two. All in all, I am quite unhappy with this lens. Avoid it at all cost.

"spend a bit more and buy the 3.5-4.5" 2005-08-18
By J. Yeh (Irvine, CA)
For $100 more, buy the 28-105mm 3.5-4.5 version. results are far better. This lens (4-5.6) is not quite there. don't even buy it.

"A bad lens rendered irrelevant by the faster version." 2004-11-15
By Richard B. Williams (Los Alamos, NM USA)
There's not much to say that hasn't been covered by the other reviews; this is a bad lens. If it were considerably cheaper it would be attractive for really low-budget amateurs. At the $150 price point, the performance shortcomings do not justify the cost.

I bought this lens because bottom dollar was my #1 priority, and this was a mistake. Canon's faster/stronger/more robust sister lens is (at most) $100 more expensive and the results are vastly superior.

One particularly disturbing aspect of this cheap-feeling plastic lens is the fact that the forward tube, when extended at 105mm, wiggles back and forth noticeably - the mechanical tolerances on this device are horrible. I also found that it is very easy to get dust and dirt into this lens (probably also due to the bad tolerances), so don't try to use it in a dirty environment.

With its effective focal length range of approximately 16-35mm in 35mm format, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is a remarkable lens with outstanding image quality that will take your photography into new dimensions and areas of dramatic expression. The super-wide zoom not only gives you the freedom to get exactly what you want in the shot, it dramatically alters perspective to allow for dynamic expression. The lens allows you to get extremely close to subjects, exaggerating the difference in size between a near object and its background. Creative photographers can use this phenomenon to create excellent separation between subject and background for a strong sense of presence, or for a pan-focus effect with everything from foreground to background sharply in focus.Exceptionally light and compact for its focal length range, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM also has an incredibly close minimum focusing distance of just 24cm.A ring-type USM works in concert with the camera to provide super-fast, precision auto focusing and predictive tracking - with full manual override available at any time.Designed specifically for digital photography, the lens has specially shaped lens elements and Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections off digital camera sensors. An exclusive optional lens hood can further reduce the incidence of flare.A circular aperture provides a pleasing background blur when shooting with a wide aperture; ideal for creating a sense of depth and getting your subject or model to stand out from the background.

 "Great all-around lens!" 2009-12-01
By FrequentBuyer (Los Angeles, CA USA)
This has been one of those lenses that stays attached to my Canon 40D almost 90% of the time. Takes sharp pictures and does a good job eliminating camera shake. USM adds great focus ability and really fast. Nice hefty and solid feel to it without being so heavy that it hurts your hands/wrists after a few hundred shots.

"Much better quality than the default lens" 2009-11-13
By Steve S. Yang
I purhcased this lens to replace the one that came with my EOS 30D camera, and I was indeed impressed with the significant improvement of picture quality.

I made my purchase based on others' reviews and they were indeed accurate and helpful. This lens definitely worths keeping as the new default lens for my 30D. I am not a professional and was only trying to shoot sharper and more color-rich images of my kids and landscapes, and it seemed I did reach my goal with this lens.

 "Soft...." 2009-10-23
By Savard (Madison, WI USA)
I'm not going to go into too much detail other than to echo the others who are disappointed with this lens. I have an XSi and this lens isn't much better than the kit lens. The problem is that I paid $400 for it.

My issues with it are mainly in image quality. Wide angle shots are usually soft, even taken on a tripod. Other shots have been soft also with aberrations, poor contrast, poor saturation and there is dust in my lens like a few others have mentioned.

I knew going in that the lens wouldn't be fast or very good in low light, and I have other options for that anyway(Mark I 50mm f1.8, Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4, Tamron 70-200 f2.8). Don't expect the IS to make this equivalent to a faster lens that doesn't have IS. Just doesn't work that way.

I just received my Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 today and cannot wait to get out and give a try. This will hopefully replace the 17-85 as my walk around lens.

The very best advice I can give anyone who is looking at Canon mid-quality lenses such as this one is to check out the Tamron equivalent. The photos I get from my 70-200 are stunningly good and I can go to 2.8 where the similarly priced Canon is a 4 I believe. IS and USM aren't that important to me, so the faster Tamrons with their outstanding picture quality are where it's at for me.

 "Just What I Needed." 2009-10-20

"Good features, not so great performance" 2009-10-07
By Ali
This is a good lens, but not great. The construction and build quality are solid, and the lens feels heavy and sturdy. It has a useful range of 17-85 as well as IS and USM which makes for ideal "walkaround" lens. However, it is not very fast (4-5.6) which limits indoor, lowlight usage. IS certainly effective and useful and will help for lowlight photography, but not for stopping action.

Ultimately though, a lens is only as good as the photos it produces. Unfortunately, this lens (or perhaps my copy of it?) disappoints in that area. Comparing shots, the kit 17-55mm IS lens actually took sharper photos than this! I still have this lens with me, but more often than not I have been disappointed with the sharpness, especially in my landscape shots (even at higher f/8-10). Barrel distortion is also fairly obvious, even to the untrained eye. Buildings, towers and other tall structures will look concaved. This is less prevalent for smaller, shorter objects, but nonetheless there. Vignetting is not present in most cases, though it can creep in at the wide end with the addition of a polarizing filter.
